Drugs – Escapes, Excuses, and What They’re Really Hiding

This is part four of my Virgo Season Detox series — a 6-part journey to expose the shadows of Virgo energy (control, perfectionism, false fixes) and release them into Pisces wisdom (surrender, wholeness, and light). In part one, we explored the illusion of “smart glasses.” In part two, we looked at the weight-loss drug craze. In part three, we unpacked the ADHD label and what it might mean on a soul level. Today, I want to talk about something heavier: drugs — and the escapes, excuses, and soul wounds hiding underneath them.

Eclipse season on the Virgo–Pisces axis reveals the push and pull we all feel. Virgo’s shadow wants to control symptoms with prescriptions, to categorize and manage what feels chaotic. Pisces’ shadow wants to escape, to dissolve pain through substances, to check out. Both are survival strategies — but neither brings true healing.

As a nurse, I’ve seen this firsthand. And as a human, I’ve loved people who didn’t survive it. I’ve also had to make the gut-wrenching decision to walk away before I became the enabler. This isn’t abstract for me. It’s personal.

Weed and marijuana cards are often treated as harmless, even spiritual — but too often they become an excuse, a bypass, a way of numbing instead of doing the hard soul work. Cocaine sells a lie of confidence and power, while hollowing people out inside. Kratom is marketed as “harm reduction” for heroin users, but if it just swaps one chain for another, is it really healing? And then there are the harder substances — heroin, fentanyl, and the synthetics even stronger, deadlier, hidden in street drugs. These are direct assaults on the life force. I’ve watched them steal people’s spark.

And here’s what’s hardest to say: the medical system feeds into this too. People are given prescriptions that mask pain instead of addressing its root. We medicate trauma instead of facing it. We prescribe distraction instead of integration. And society normalizes it by telling us “it’s just the way it is.”

If this feels triggering, it’s only because we’ve been programmed to think addiction is normal, unavoidable, or impossible to heal. But I believe every substance has a spiritual and emotional shadow it reveals: not the drug itself, but the pain we’re avoiding underneath.

So ask yourself: what are you actually trying not to feel? What truth are you running from when you reach for the next high — whether it’s a joint, a pill, a line, or a needle?

Virgo tries to manage and control. Pisces tries to dissolve and escape. But there’s another path: to face the pain directly, to let the light move through it, to allow healing instead of numbing.

This was part four of Virgo Season Detox. In the next post, we’ll shift into another growing obsession — the fixation on hormones, “low T,” and testosterone. What if the real crisis isn’t chemical at all, but an identity crisis in the soul?

I’m grateful you chose to spend a few moments here with me. If this sparked reflection, let me feel your presence — comment, tap the heart, or pass it on to someone you love. Together, we’re harvesting health at the root.

On the journey back to wholeness,

Karen Di Gloria ✨
